METROGAMES

Metrogames was an Argentinean company creator of social networks and social games for the LATAM market. I worked there from 2007-2011 and did a wide variety of things.

THE EARLY DAYS

When I joined Metrogames back in 2007 the company was not even called like that yet. My main responsibility back then was the development of Frontends for their social networks from a holistic perspective, which is a fancy way of saying I did a ton of HTML, JS and CSS the good old fashioned way.

For context, Prototype.js was the tool of the hour, Flash dominated the market and libraries like JQuery, Backbone or RequireJS were months or years away from being invented.

Also, there was this new social network called Facebook, which completely changed the business model of Metrogames (and many others I believe).

As Facebook raised to the top, so did its gaming platform. And in mid 2008 Metrogames retired from the "building social networks" business (wonder why) to focus on building social games exclusively.

For me personally it meant... not much really.
I transitioned from developing Frontends for Metrogames's social networks to the developing Frontends for supporting Metrogames's social games.

... from a holistic perspective.

Enter Metrogames

As a consequence of Metrogames becoming a gaming company my tasks and responsibilities... barely shifted.

Though there was an awkward phase during the transition, I found myself working on the development of their gaming social network OpenClub.com, and also getting involved in tasks such as UI design for social games, mixing my design and development skills.

Exit Metrogames

Sadly, the company shut down in 2012 and most of the games are no longer available.

Nevertheless, I was fortunate enough to acquire valuable lessons that I still apply to this day.
